Associate Editor, Culture

Do you want to help make the world better for queer and trans folks through journalism?

Xtra is an award-winning digital magazine covering culture and politics through an LGBTQ2S+ lens. Its publisher is Pink Triangle Press (PTP), the Toronto-based, independent, queer-run media company.

This groundbreaking and feisty brand is looking for a creative and passionate Associate Editor to contribute to Xtra’s ambitious growth with excellent, boundary-expanding writing and multimedia storytelling in the area of culture.

The ideal candidate for the role is a journalist with a deep knowledge of and passion for telling queer and trans stories in North America and beyond. We’re looking for someone fast, smart, funny and opinionated, with a strong point of view on both the powers that be and those working to improve the lives of our community members. The candidate should be adept at writing and editing a variety of formats, including quick reaction stories, interviews, profiles, essays, investigative pieces and analysis. Broadcast experience, podcasts and other forms of multimedia storytelling, including social media video, are definitely an asset.

The successful candidate can be based in Toronto, where Xtra’s office is located, or work remotely from elsewhere in Canada. Currently all PTP employees are working mostly remotely with some expectations for in-person meetings. All interviews for this position will be conducted virtually.

What the job entails:

  • With the support of the Managing Editor, Xtra, the Associate Editor will oversee Xtra’s coverage of culture, including a combination of screens (film, TV and Internet culture) and music.
  • Conceiving of, producing, assigning, editing and packaging stories; coordinating the publication of stories across a variety of platforms (both written and multimedia)
  • Processing daily press releases and pitches and establishing a network of contacts and topic-area experts who contribute to your understanding of diverse and ever-shifting LGBTQ2S+ content
  • Collaborating with other editors on stories

What you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience working as a journalist or equivalent experience
  • A deep interest in culture and how it affects LGBTQ2S+ identities
  • An understanding of the unique opportunities and best practices of digital storytelling and online journalism
  • Experience editing and creating longform, news, feature and opinion pieces; a supportive and respectful approach to working with writers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences
  • A strong sense of voice and style
  • Experience in story packaging, display writing, SEO, layout and design and social media
  • Bonus skills: a familiarity with Xtra’s other core content (politics and activism) and experience with video and audio storytelling

What's in it for you:

  • Competitive pay and a great group of people to spend time with every day
  • Flexible schedule
  • Benefits: health, dental, orthodontic, vision, etc.
  • A company matched pension plan and life and disability insurance
  • Access to all the training and support you need to get the job done
  • An opportunity to be part of an exciting, growing organization

If this is you, please apply at the link provided and send us your CV and a one-page cover letter telling us a bit about yourself, what you’d bring to the role and why you want to work at Xtra. We're looking forward to hearing from you!
