Program Director

Full-time
Salary: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 Annually
Application Deadline: N/A

We’re excited to share this new job opening for a program director. Founded in 2020, the Trans Journalists Association supports a community of hundreds of trans journalists and advises the journalism industry with resources to reflect trans experiences accurately and humanely in the news. We do so through programming, training, and commentary — work that is crucial at a time when our communities are facing increasing restrictions on our civil and human rights.

Our growing association seeks to hire its second full-time staff member to support our programs, which include membership trainings, public records projects, professional development stipends, coverage advice, and in-person events. The person in this role will work closely with a dedicated board and our executive director.

The position is full-time and benefits-eligible. This is a fully remote job with flexible hours and some potential travel.

Our hiring process involves a phone screener, followed by a paid edit test, and then a panel interview.

We will review applications on a rolling basis. Apply on our Airtable form. Application materials sent in via other platforms may not be reviewed. Individual inquiries are OK, but we are a very small team and may not be able to respond.

About the work

We’re a community that supports journalists, newsrooms, and journalism organizations across the entire media ecosystem. Our membership is primarily U.S.-based, but we have a growing international cohort that also includes trans journalists in Canada, the UK, Singapore, Europe, and South America. We’re also building a growing network of members and allies who are invested in covering trans communities and fostering the professional development of trans journalists.

This work will require the following tasks:

  • Administrate the TJA’s ongoing programs, including the Level Up stipends program, our What to FOIA collaboration with MuckRock, and the Trans News Initiative
  • Project manage contractors and volunteers who are contributing to resources like our style and workplace guides
  • Plan one-off membership trainings, newsroom trainings, conference panels, and in-person events
  • Write FAQs and other resources to help TJA members find and navigate program offerings — a bit of HTML and familiarity with Ghost CMS will help with this
  • Coordinate with social media contractors and external partners to publicize programs
  • Evaluate the successes, failures, and opportunities for growth and change in existing programs, and keep detailed records for internal and grant reporting
  • Seek feedback from TJA members and others in our community to explore new programs that meet the needs of trans journalists and our broader journalism networks
  • Cooperate with partners on coverage analysis and coalition-building projects
  • Travel a few times a year for conferences or team events, as needed and as safety and other considerations allow

We’d also love it if this person can do or is interested in learning the following. Many of our projects involve these tasks, but these skills aren’t required for the job:

  • Review or write FOIA and public records requests to contribute to open records projects
  • Make pivot tables for tracking progress over time and summarizing wins in Google Sheets or a comparable tool
  • Evaluate trends in news coverage to identify potential avenues for media analysis and accountability work
  • Develop forward-facing resources for trans journalists using technical tools like ArchieML, JavaScript, and collaborative workflows through Google Docs and Github
  • Identify potential avenues for funding, donations, and sponsorships for specific programs
